What can a Steinbach/ Winnipeg Wedding DJ learn from a magician for fun cocktail hour ideas

So on Saturday May 3 I had the pleasure attending a birthday party for friends of ours son in the Niverville area. On our way all I could think of was me reliving my childhood, attending birthday parties that started at noon and ended at 4 in the afternoon, ice cream, cup cakes and goody bags oh how I love the goody bags. Then. Reality hits me and I remember that I’m an adult and I gotta stand by the side while all the kids have the “real fun” oh man…this sucks !

When we got down stairs I noticed that there was a gentleman who they said was from Winnipeg, he was setting up and he had a a Bunch of playing cards, took a closer look and It was Alex Hamm the Magician.. Sweet! If anyone knows me they know I’m a huge geek for magic and all things mythical. Today was getting better by the minute

When it was time all the kids got ushered in they made a semi circle and Alex jumped right in, he had them eating out of the palm of his hand, kids and adults alike were amazed. He got the adults involved with tricks that made sense for adults which I could totally see working at wedding reception during cocktail hour.

Alex Hamm Winnipeg Magician Wedding Reception

At one point this Winnipeg Magician used kids as magicians as well, which helps to tie things in, cement the moment in their minds and make the birthday party fun & memorable, I don’t know about you but that’s got “Fun Wedding Idea” written all over it.

I noticed that he started to pull random things out of thin air and from behind people’s ears (typical right?) until you see that these things light up and then get caught in a brown paper bag, a little trippy

There was times he took audience belongings and made it look like he destroyed it ( which freaked out the owners ) but got a good chuckle when they got it back in one piece, and he did a pretty good job of getting the hosts involved on.

I’m thinking that as an interactive DJ company in the Winnipeg and Steinbach area who specializes in personalizing wedding ceremonies & receptions I’d be very interested in pointing my couples in the direction of a magician like Alex Hamm.

What I’ve learnt from this Winnipeg magician “Alex Hamm” is that using something like Magic can definitely entice and awe your guests during the cocktails while the bride and groom are busy getting their wedding pictures done.

Winnipeg & Steinbach DJs on Wedding floor plans & seating charts

When it comes on to get your Winnipeg/ Steinbach reception ready for your guests there are lots to consider and one of them is the floor plan. it should be given the right amount of attention but not too much because then you get caught up in the little things and before you know it you’ve made a mountain out of a mole hill. (trust me if you do, you will drive everyone away from you)

A few things to consider in Manitoba are the young, the old, the unborn and especially in Winnipeg Wedding Scene the easily aggravated.

The young – if you’re having kids at your wedding if they are really young, you may want to have high chairs available (some venues in Winnipeg or steinbach area provide high chairs) or make room for strollers, if they are old enough to interact with others consider putting all the children together in an area of the room that will give enough space for them to run around and a little ways away from the head table or cake or food or dance floor area. I once seen at a wedding in Steinbach a 4 year old ran into the cake table, it was all over the floor after that. You also want to keep them away from the DJ area as kids love playing hide and seek and tag and around sound equipment is not place for kids.

The old – many times grand parents are placed in front of the dance floor so they can be front and center to see everything but once the dancing begins and the music gets turned up the older guests get quite frustrated because its too loud even for them, they just want to visit and catch up and they can’t do that, or in some case their tables have to be moved to make room for the actual dancing which is a popular thing in winnipeg. All of the above reasons can drive them home earlier than  you hoped. When planning for your floor plan be sure to put the older guests somewhere that they can still see but won’t be made uncomfortable maybe somewhere like the center of the room the second row of tables from the dance floor.

The unborn – If you have friends or family that are pregnant having them close the the rest rooms is always a great idea. If you or anyone you know has ever been pregnant you’ll know that they visit the restroom 2 times as much as anyone else. when it comes on to being close to the music or dance floor that’s not generally a problem if the mom can handle the music and dancing then she’s good to go.

The easily aggravated – Ok maybe not the best choice of words but what I mean is if you have members of the family or friends who don’t get along but are both invited then you will want to sit them as far part from each other as possible and I mean far. not like 1 table over where they can see the other persons lips moving and be wondering if they are talking about them (lol) but far apart so there are no issues. I’ve seen a hand full of weddings both in Winnipeg & Steinbach that we have the the DJ’s at and where family gets put together and don’t like each other and end up causing an uproar at weddings. Not a good idea

When it comes to the DJ/ Entertainment or Party its extremely important to have the DJ directly in front of or next to the dance floor. IT IS A BAD IDEA TO HAVE ANY TABLES BETWEEN THE DJ AND THE DANCE FLOOR. We’ve seen to many times where family is siting right next to the DJ and are screaming at him/ her to turn it down but then there are people on the dance floor yelling TURN IT UP!! any other floor plan will be problematic.

Below i’ve shown you pictures of good floor plans and also pictures of bad floor plans.

When all else fails you can always nix the idea of a seating plan and have everyone sit where ever they want. this will allow all your friends from Winnipeg to sit with other Winnipeg friends, all your steinbach peeps can hang with the others from that area as well it really depends on how important an aspect like this is to your wedding planning.

3 Ways a Winnipeg DJ can help make your wedding amazing!

When it comes to weddings one of the people who should know the most about the day is the DJ. With such a small wedding industry in Winnipeg, Steinbach and surrounding areas it’s important for us to help our brides & grooms as much as we can.

I’m gonna give you 3 ways that a Winnipeg DJ can help you make your wedding amazing and just keep in mind that not every DJ is experienced or competent enough to pull these off, but we can.

1. Brides Surprise Message @ the Wedding Ceremony

We recently did a wedding in Kenose Lake, SK for Samantha & David. (Yes Dj’s can travel that far) During the planning Sam told me how much her and David were in love and she’d love to surprise him at every turn during the reception and she wanted the help of her wedding DJ to pull it off, that’s when I suggested why not start at the ceremony? Everyone is so used to seeing flashy hings happen  at the reception… why not take them all by surprise?

So we sat down and I recorded a little audio interview with Sam “About David” she blushed every time she though back to when they were just high school sweethearts or when they finally got engaged. After asking all the right questions I left the room and gave her only once instruction. “I want you to talk to David as if he were right here and it’s only you and him. I left for 5 minutes.

At the wedding ceremony as David waited at the front his eyes widened when Sam came down, but what really floored him was when she got about 1/2 way the music slowly faded and her voice came in and for the next 10 – 15 seconds she told him exactly what she was excited about and why. The look on his face and the emotions that she expressed to him were memories that will be remembered for ever.

We arranged with the officiate and the photographer so they were able to get them selves ready and the photographer Tatum Durbya from Paper Moon Photography in Saskatchewan did an amazing job capturing it all.

2. Ring Security & production @  The Ceremony

Jill & Keith had  1 son and wanted to integrate him in the wedding as much as possible, they told me that they wanted kyle to be the ring bearer but he was a little shy and they weren’t sure how he’s react and wanted the help of their DJ’s who were providing sound and microphones for the ceremony to pull it all together. After chatting a bit we figured Kyle really loved action movies and Mission impossible was one of his fav’s We managed to get him a pair of sick shades and a black ear piece that made him look like he worked for the secret service and very very small black suit case. We them found the theme music to Mission impossible and he was sold on it!

during the wedding ceremony he almost stole the show, guests were snapping pictures it was the best wedding ceremony that most guest around the Winnipeg or steinbach area had ever seen.

Here’s an example of what ring security can look like.

 3. Bridal Party Flash Mob @The Ceremony

We were out in Brandon for Wedding and it was all held inside. When the ceremony started, we had soft music playing as the officiant walked in, the music faded and when we hit play all the guest could heard was “Party Rock is in the house tonight!!” each member of the wedding party came shuffling and dancing the best moves as they came down the isle. The guests went wild and had a good laugh. Then when it was the bride & grooms turn to come in they did the same. They had all practiced a few dance moves and were showing them off for sure.
